Default Some nice hair info

African American Hair : Basics

African American Hair requires moisture to stay healthy. The hair in its natural state is curly and somewhat spiral. The strands are flat in areas and cylindrical in others. The hair has a tendency to break where the strand flattens.

Maintaing a proper moisture balance is vital because it keeps it soft, pliable and eliminates stressors that can cause breakage.

Take a look at some common products that may cause damage and a look at others that help the scalp and hair.

Hair Grease
Hair grease made of petroleum clogs the pores and slows the growth process. Petroleum based products prevent the scalp from breathing. Dirt and bacteria become trapped in the follicles causing the scalp to become stagnant. The result: hair loss.

Hair Gel
Hair Gel contains high amounts of alcohol which can damage the hair and scalp. Purchase a quality gel and add 10 to 15 drops of Kemi Oil or Sashakira Karite Oil to the container of gel, stir with a spoon and use as directed. The oil serves as a buffer to prevent the alcohol from drying the hair and scalp. If you use gel daily, shampoo your hair more than twice a week to remove possibly damaging build up.

Gel Alternative
Lightly moisten hair with warm water.
Add 3 drops of Kemi Oil, Mizani Oil or Sashakira Karite Oil to your moisturizing conditioner and apply to the hair and style as normal. Note: the oil will prevent the conditioner from making your hair look dull.

Dread Locks
Dread lock styles are beautiful. When the hair is properly maintained and conditioned they can be magnificent.

1. When conditioning your locks, use lots of it. Thoroughly saturate the hair from scalp to ends.
2. Always rinse the hair well and use vinegar rinses to remove excess shampoo.
3. Cover the head when sleeping.
4. Have your ends trimmed at least twice a year.
5. Use a good quality liquid oil twice a week.

1. Get rid of the perm (press or blow dry every once in a while, braids, natural)
2. Wash your hair once a week
3. Use a conditioning detangler to comb out wet hair (I recommend Janol--it's the best so far)
4. If you have braids, keep them no longer than 1-2 months and use toner or astringent and a Q tip to go between the parts (I recommend 10-0-6 from Walmart)
5. Trim your ends religiously, every 6 weeks at least

no you can still have the perm, but wrap it at night with wrapping lotion. in the morning, gently comb it out and moiturize, then stlye as desired.
wash your hair every 2wks, every week dries out your hair and leaves the scalp too clean which is fertile ground for lice, also hair grows best in its natural state if you wash it evry wk you wash out all the protiens the hair produces to help to grow. also stressing your hair out breaks it so wash every 2wks.
use conditioner, wash out then put in leave in conditioner and wrap your hair before going to bed, dont blow dry your hair becasue too much heat can also dry and break your hair, if you want to blow dry your hair, wrap it (again) and put a shower cap over the wrapping net and (basically wrap setting), grease it after it dry and stlye as desired.
grease your hair twice a week.
dont go for the cheap products they will dmage your hair invest in good quality products, ive stated using the organics range and fantasia. expecnsive but worth it.

there no alterntive to greasing your hair, it has to be done, just go to any hair shop and ask for the products that dont contain petroleum jelly. howver it depends on how often you use the greae ive been using products that contain pertoleum my whole life and my hair hasnt suffered, just dont forget to moisturize.

I don't agree with this. You have to use judgement on and individual basis. Some people's hair grows faster or gets damaged faster than others.

if I were to trim my hair every 6 weeks, I'd be bald headed in a year.

For me, every 12 weeks is about right (every other relaxer). I don't get split ends or breakage unless I overextend the period between relaxers or I get lazy and don't take care of my hair properly.

My big problem is dandruff, not split ends. If someone can come up with that cure I'd love you forever....

thats true, trim accprdingly not every 6 weeks, a friend trims 2x a yr, and she has long healthy hair past armpit length.
If u take care of ur ends well, u wont have to trim like that. Folks need to be careful of scissors happy stylists. Everythin ur stylist says isnt golden, be proactive as well.
