Initially I was okay with their opinions but the last few years I have struggled within myself and I decided that I would marry whoever I wanted to be with. My parents are not going to marry the girl, I am so I told my Mom that I am gonna marry anyone and if they dont like it,then am sorry. I guess it's because of the civil war that occured several years ago that's why. No doubt I have met some tribalistic girls be it Yoruba, Edo etc but in the end I told them to pack their bags because am not tribalistic and I dont want anything to do with u. I have a few yoruba friends who are really nice and wouldnt mind dating igbo people or anybody for that matter because it's love that conquers not all this tribal crap.
I have yoruba relatives so why must I be different I mean. I ask babes upfront if they are kool with me and if they are fine, if not I tell them to get out and that's if I meet any nigerian chicks in the first place.
AMEN.

Exactly, they need to understand that the whole entire world is undergoing a huge change.

I remember this episode in the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, when the youngest Aunt of Will got married to a white guy and Will's mum wouldn't give her blessings...I am sure that my Mum remembers to this very day what i had said about that.

So if you know that you have a guy/gurl outside your tribe...it's time you start dropping hints about how you feel about their reservations.

I guess adamma and Onyiiboy are so upset about it because they didn't grow up with those kind of attitudes. I mean, most people who grew up in Nigeria know that if you're dating someone you parents will disapprove of because of religion or tribe or whatever, you make sure your parents never find out about the relationship. And, if you guys start getting really serious, you start dropping hints about it and gradually lead up to the BIG fight.

I'm not saying it's right; I think it's wrong to tell me I can only marry an Ibo guy who is Anglican and comes from a "reputable" family, but the truth is, that's how my parents, aunts and uncles, and many people of their generation for that matter, see things. But we have to realize that it's not restricted to Nigerians; even here in the US, white parents will disapprove if their kid wants to marry a Black or Hispanic person, and vice versa. The only reason they probably won't "forbid" the marriage is that in the American culture, it's understood that the person can go do whatever the heck they want with or without the family's "approval", so the parents quickly shut up and accept things. Nigerian parents will shut up and acceptt things too after a while if they see that you this person makes you happy and you really love each other.

eeem in the US, I know of several people who disowned their child for marrying black, American culture or no American culture. My friend's sister is still rel bitter her younger uncle married an older white lady and its been 12yrs, cause accordin to her he was a fine black man and could have married any fine black woman he wanted.
