Question Any solutions for damaged/breaking hair???

After a few days of perming, when I brush/comb my hair, I just see my hair falling off. I don't even perm my hair that often. My hair is thin.

Also, its been a while since I braided my hair (not corn rows) cos after leaving it in for such a while, my hair is tangled and loads of hair are lost. Probably cos I've had it in for a while (more than 2 mos). I also started doing da bonding-type weaves like a year ago, but I hate that glue. I had 1 or 2 bald spots from that cos dat glue just sticks to ur hair. So i haven't done that in a while. I'ma even thinkin of doing da sew-on weaves but they seem to be pretty exprensive.

Nowadays, I just do perms and corn rows. Corn rows do add more hair length but still my hair breaks. I've been using this new Soft Sheen Breakthru product but i dun think its really helpin.

Any suggestions will be kindly appreciated, thanx.

girl, I went through that shit and now my hair is long (for a typical Naija girl, that is)

BRAID YOUR HAIR! Especially in the winter... don't leave it too long and don't relax it for at least a week after you take out your braids. I used to think that was hogwash but ever since I stopped doing that, my hair hardly breaks... and my hair used to fall out in clumps like a week after a relaxing.

Braid. Trim. Condition. Use wide tooth combs.

Thanks fo ur input so far, but when you said braid, do u mean like corn-rows, and/or micro, medium braids? Becos when I do corn-rows it doesn't pull much hair out and it makes my grow hair compared to micro braids or other similar kinds. But it still breaks tho. And so are you saying that your solution to ending the damaged hair was braiding?

Well I don't perm it that often tho. Before it used to be like 3 or 4 times a year. But now I do it like once a month. Either way, my hair is still falling out.

I had the same prob and still kinda do...i used to have to cut my hair twice a year.

Is your hair breaking from the root or breaking mid-strand?...do you have dry/itchy scalp? You may have to go see a dermatologist

anyways like phantom said braid your hair thats what i do

@phantom...pls pray tell......... what do you do to your hair for a whole week after you take your braids out??? I have so much new growth after a month i have to do something to it almost as soon as i take my braids out (and i don't keep them in longer than 4-6wks)...

I think my hair is breaking mid-strand cos da ends just dun look right. But i'ma not sure if its breakin from da root. And my scalp doesn't itch much.......but fo a year now, i've been braiding (only corn-rows) which adds a new growth just like u said and i keep em fo a month and then get a perm......wait 2 or 3 wks then get ma hair braided again. And its been dis same way fo a year.

But what else do ya'll do tho? Just braid? But do u get ur hair relaxed? But what exactly made ur hair stop breaking or reduced the breaking? Cos all I do is braid and perm once a while.

If you are balding and my god i hope not then there is no way of helping the situation, when you are balding it is a natural cause. believe me as a last resort do not use any of those 'chinese remedies' because they do not help, i suggest you leave your hair in cornrolls and eventually it will thicken out but not too tight because it seems that your hair is sensitive those kind of tactics pull your hair out further, dont relax it and let it naturally fall out, if you keep combing your hair then it will just keep falling out.

ohhh no, i'ma surely not balding. thank God i ain't tho cos whooa, that wouldn't be good. but what do u mean by chinese remedies? and so u're saying i shouldn't relax at all? I only relax like after a month or less after I take the cornrows out. then 2 or 3 wks after, i get my hair done in cornrows again.

btw, thanks for suggestions so far.

o.k if u r in school u can be afrocentric for a week and just wear a scarf or head tie or whatever

if you're working in corporate America, wash and condition ur hair then use a hot comb to straighten it... u can style it for 1 or 2 weeks then relax.

keepin-it-real... I think medium braids r the best. With cornrows u'll have to take them out often and sometimes ur hair just needs to rest. micros can break ur hair if ur hair is brittle or fragile. but if cornrows r the best for ur type of hair, how about doing a style that lasts for a while? The main issue is u let ur hair rest and u don't fiddle with it too much... also braids prevent ur hair from being over exposed during the awful weather.

keepin-it-real make sure u trim ur hair at least once/ two months... or after ever perm. As ur hair grows and thickens you'll see u have to trim less and less (hair) ... aiight

Hey Keeping-it-real I use to have this problem.....You need to get a relaxer every 4-6 weeks and get your ends trimmed every 4-6 weeks as well...if the hair is breaking mid-length then you need to get a deep conditoner. Use oils like Jojoba, almond, olive, and coconut these are very good oils especially jojoba which is the oil your hair produces naturally....use one or more for a hot oil treatment once a week. Also you probably should find a hair stylist to help you care for your hair until it is healthy.....a good thing to do is get a Straight wrap or a Roller wrap....Wraps are better than blowdrying your hair because it isn't direct heat on your hair. (Limit or eliminate the use curling irons, straighting irons or blowdryers). Also only use natural bristle brushes on your hair (Sally Beauty Supply). My last advise is to stop braiding your hair....it puts too much tension on the hair and your hair sound like it really fragile so you need to concentrate on conditioning it, getting your ends trimmed, and finding a stylist...Good luck!
