It may have been freezing out, but when the most sought-after designer shoes in New York are going for half off, bargain hunters don't get cold feet.

Hundreds of women, credit cards in hand, lined up for hours outside the Manolo Blahnik store on 54th Street and Fifth Avenue to purchase the fancy footwear, which Madonna once described as "better than sex."

"This is truly the mother of all shoe sales," said Carol Brown, 31, a secretary from Manhattan who played hooky from work.

"This is like our Super Bowl. I wouldn't miss this for anything in the world."

The high-heel creations - which can sell for as much as $1,000 a pair - are popular among celebrities like "Sex and the City" star Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwyneth Paltrow and Bianca Jagger.

"The shoes are very comfortable, and they're very sexy," said Susan Paik, 34, of Manhattan.

Store manager Abby Bennet said she was shocked to see such a big crowd brave the chilly temperatures for hours.

"We always expect crowds when we have a big sale, but I'm surprised at the turnout," said Bennet, as she gazed out the store window around 11 a.m. at the more than 100 women still waiting to take advantage of the one-day sale, which only happens twice a year.

"I expected less people to show up because it's just so cold." The store opened at 10:30, but only a dozen were allowed in at a time.

Tina Smith, 28, an elementary-school teacher from Brooklyn, said, "I really don't care how cold it is out here. All I'm worried about is getting inside and buying shoes."

Some even dragged their kids - many of them in strollers.

"I rearranged my whole schedule because I just had to be here," said Julia Fenster, 32, as she waited in line with her year-old daughter, Avalon. "These are really good-quality shoes, and a sale like this only happens twice a year. I couldn't miss it."

what do they mean by sale....if a pair of shoes that ranges for $500 and up is on sale- it still wouldn't be a sale for me.........couldn't afford it..............

for one thing mz. cokomust, i was just saying that was a good sale, i like the finer things and have the money to buy it. I never said i was buying the fakes, i just stated the price. The fakes have the timberland sign and everything and plus for me its only 100 my friend works there. The steve maddens don't have the sign and don't come in the color i want. I never said i was buying a fake pair cause trust me hun i have the bills to buy the real pair. And can i ask u a question, What does me being in Louisiana, have to do with anything?

no actually i do understand your type very well. When someone buys something expensive(or what u think is expensive) u talk about them. I know i have the money to buy the real or the fakes, that's all that matters. Just because you won't buy them, someone else isn't.
