Default Asking permission

The other day, my distant fam's bf (now fiance) came to the crib and asked her father for permission to marry his daughter.

Of course, as u can assume, the man said yes, and gave his blessings and whatever.

But i started thinking, is it really necc for the man to go up to the father of the woman to ask for her hand in marriage? Really? I mean we all know (or have been in) situations where the father of the girl doesn't even like the fact they are dating because say they are from different ethnic groups or something or wut not.

So why ask when you know or you're sure you going to marry her/spend your life with her anyway?

He will be more respected for going to the father and talking to him man to man. I am not sure how the nigerian culture does it though. It might not be acceptable for the boy to come by himself. You know how your people like to do I am older than you crap. I really believe that it is something that should not be skipped. You will have a relationship with this people for the rest of your life.

it is a sign of respect to your family
and maybe a sign of love

its is a good thing

who wouldnt want their families backing

if family is not 'acceptant' and the couple are sure of what they are doing then they can go ahead...
