It originated from a notion of self-preservation, whereby one's chances of being hurt are greatly diminished when the other party's feelings are stronger for you than yours are for him. Like the saying goes, the person who has the most power in a relationship is the one who has the least invested. Being that guys are perceived to be the more ruthless sex when it comes to relationships, a woman is considered better off if she has someone who is more emotionally invested in her than she is in him (at least as far as the security of the relationship is concerned).
