****Little Girl Murderer****

"a local 7 year old has been taken into custody by police after her father was found brutally murdered in their front lawn earlier this evening. Its our policy not to disclose minor's names, but this is the same girl whose mother committed an apparent suicide a little over 3 months ago..."

Rain slashed the broken sky
As she stood there,
Silent
No jacket,
No shoes
The dirt of two days clinging to her skin despite
The heavy showers.
Only a careful eye could
See the glint of sharpened steel extended
From her tiny clenched fist.
She kept her left hand behind her
Back
Like a child
Holds surprises
A secret
To be told.

She smiled
Crooked
Like the rain
Fell
Crooked
Like the world
Crooked.
Impatiently,
She brought her left
Hand forth
His scalp in hand
Like jack-o-lantern
The blood is fresh
And stinks of struggle
She laughs

Little girls
Play with dolls and have
Tea parties,
On front lawns
When the grass is
As green as them,
But she
Swept the shards of glass
From whiskey bottles
Dropped in rage.
“Where is mommy”
she asked
before
his hand
and
her face
became
acquainted
in thundering unison.
All is still…

3.
She dreams
Of a blue mermaid
Staring
Thru clear water
Arm outstretched
But never
Quite
Reaching.
Gracefully still.

4.
The police said
Her mother was
Drowned
And left in the bathtub
Eyes open
Arm hanging over the railing.
They found her daughter
Quiet
Staring at the lifeless
Body
No tears.
Clenched fist.
Smiling, in awe.

5.
She is alive
She is a child for the first
Time,
She kisses the severed head
No glass to
Sweep
Even this silence
Cannot be broken.
