To the best of my knowledge, the osu "caste" system is a recent thing that was a byproduct of the slave trade.

So Igbo people adopted it after slave trade? What kind of culture is that? So you guys cannot change it?

From what I understand, before the slave trade, the osu system was similar to the levite system in the bible....they had alot of benefits...didn't have to pay for certain things...etc. However, when the slave trade started, all types of people tried to become one to escape enslavement...and so it radically changed into something different. Had it been the way it is now since the beginning, do you think anyone would have Osu in their last name?

I noticed that you Igbo people have surnames like Nwaosu, Osuji etc. So these people are not OSU? Is there any book that I can read in this issue? Thanks

So if I see anyone with surname as Nwosu, that means the person is Osu? Do they have marks to distinguish them from those who are not? Basically, if the person does not say his or her surname, then I will not know? I am learning alot here. Do they teach this in school to the Igbos? Sorry for my questions. I just want to learn. Thanks.

It means that one of their ancestors was a priest or affiliated with taking care of one of the shrines of the village

So taking care of the shrines or being a priest for the shrine does not make you one? But you can answer the name?

I apologize...osus and priests were different. Taking care of the shrines did make you an osu.
