Yeah, it's done in numerous ethnic groups. My Edo friend has them and so does my mum...

I don't know why she has them sha... cos her brothers don't. But many areas usually have the small ones sha - not those huge ass gashes.

i believe it's when the marks are used for religious purposes (ward off evil / treat an illness / etc).

we have them in Bini... my cousins got them but when they attempted to do ours my mum went berserk on them some of my paternal cousins have them but i don't think any on my mum's side does.
My dad has one it's really small never noticed until like this year.he said it was done because all the babies that my grandmother had after him kept dying so they did it to keep him alive... or from gerrin sick.
Binis usually have the 3 small markings on each cheek.
