A lot of times, weavers recycled thread from older cloths to remake new ones in a rare color. I can't speak definitively for Igboland, but red dye was expensive in Yoruba areas and were largely restricted to chiefs and religious usage. It's usually associated with male activities, war, blood etc. I've read that the There's a book about precolonial and colonial-era textiles manufacturing in northern Yorubaland called "Cloth That Does Not Die". It also talks about precolonial textiles in West Africa in general. If you look in the index, you might be able to find references for similiar books about Igbo textiles.

i enjoyed this thread...once more kulata and his coward self. i did find out wat that yoruba phrase he said to me meant. just like this thread, alot of yoruba pple tried to justify the phrase. i think that thread i opened abt it was deleted.

I have always been very interested in cultures, especially pre-colonial African cultures. I would have gone online to find info about it but since the thought came to me while browsing NR, I asked here. I'm sorry if I offended anyone.

Sensitive people won't want to hear this but there's some truth in that statement.
