Default Proverbs 22.6: Train a Child...

Proverbs 22:6 - "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it."

I used to think that this verse was a lie for a very long time. Over and over again, I would see cases of parents "training" kids in the "right" way, and over and over again, I would see those same kids departing from that training and living very contrary to how their parents had trained them....now matter what ethnicity, religion or nationalitiy. However, I have a deeper understanding of what the author of the verse meant and now know how alot of parents go wrong. The mistake that most people make when reading the verse is to train the actions of a child...not the desires. One can force a child to perform actions but if the desire is not there, they WILL DEPART from it as soon as they get the chance. That is why children can be well behaved when they are in their parent's houses and so badly behaved as soon as they leave. The training that must occur is one of desires....helping the child to desire the things that the parent desires. That is the only way that they will not depart from it as they get older. I say that parents (especially Africans) must depart from a doctrine of training with discipline and replace it with a training of desires.

you dont think you train your desires with discipline? like you fast- discipline your desires.

But I get the general gist. dont make the kids automatons of the 'right', use psychology instead.

nice to share it.

Too many parents get caught up into forcing doctrines and choices upon children. However, if they were to give their children a choice (or an illusison of choice), that would be more beneficial to both parties than using force or fear to try to train actions.

Thats called a habit. But if the desire is not there, it will eventually fade away.
