VHDL, FPGAs, and IC programming

I dont work in hardware field, but i did comp Engr in college so i might be able to help you depending on how much vhdl memories i have left in my brain

Men U guys are just the bomb.....this is a nu field to me and I must turn in a 100% project 19th March..and i don't even know what the shege is about.....So let me start from IP cores....I want to design a chip for an Audio Adaptive filter, Using Modelsim and the FPGA will be on a pegasus board.

don't know if this will help you at all but this was my Bible when i took a vhdl course. it gives you the basics of vhdl using examples

it gives you the basics of defining ports and components in vhdl, everything else is pretty much programming syntax...as per for loops, if-else statements and such. of course vhdl has it's own style but that should be easy to pick up from looking at the examples.

If you have the exact project requirements, you should start with identifying the components and ports you'll be working with.

oh yeah and vhdl is a functional program, at least the way i learnt it sha. so what you want to do is identify the ports on the chip you'll be using, identify the requirements on the ports and so each block of your program should have blocks that go something like this:

port a{
signal 1, 2, 3
component 1, 2, 3
---define the function of port a
}

and so on. cos i'm guessing you'll need to send audio signals to/from the IC

sappire said it best . I assume you already have the schematic of your device drawn out on an app such like pSpice or so. You will need to verify the logical correctness of your device first by hand - i.e what inputs cause what outputs.
you then should then build your basic circuits such as the ORs, ANDs, NORs, etc in modelsim. Then use this components to build your high level device. After you think you're done building the device, check out the timing diagram of the device, using modelsim and see if you get the same results as you did earlier. Modelsim is a nice IDE.

since you're using an fpga, then vhdl/verilog is the way to go. there are some ti dsk boards that you could program filters designed in matlab. very good stuff. let us know how the project is going.
