African American Hair requires moisture to stay healthy. The hair in its natural state is curly and somewhat spiral. The strands are flat in areas and cylindrical in others. The hair has a tendency to break where the strand flattens.

Maintaing a proper moisture balance is vital because it keeps it soft, pliable and eliminates stressors that can cause breakage.

Take a look at some common products that may cause damage and a look at others that help the scalp and hair.

Hair Grease
Hair grease made of petroleum clogs the pores and slows the growth process. Petroleum based products prevent the scalp from breathing. Dirt and bacteria become trapped in the follicles causing the scalp to become stagnant. The result: hair loss.

Hair Gel
Hair Gel contains high amounts of alcohol which can damage the hair and scalp. Purchase a quality gel and add 10 to 15 drops of Kemi Oil or Sashakira Karite Oil to the container of gel, stir with a spoon and use as directed. The oil serves as a buffer to prevent the alcohol from drying the hair and scalp. If you use gel daily, shampoo your hair more than twice a week to remove possibly damaging build up.

Gel Alternative
Lightly moisten hair with warm water.
Add 3 drops of Kemi Oil, Mizani Oil or Sashakira Karite Oil to your moisturizing conditioner and apply to the hair and style as normal. Note: the oil will prevent the conditioner from making your hair look dull.

Dread Locks
Dread lock styles are beautiful. When the hair is properly maintained and conditioned they can be magnificent.

1. When conditioning your locks, use lots of it. Thoroughly saturate the hair from scalp to ends.
2. Always rinse the hair well and use vinegar rinses to remove excess shampoo.
3. Cover the head when sleeping.
4. Have your ends trimmed at least twice a year.
5. Use a good quality liquid oil twice a week.
