I think instaed instead of fighting each other ...we should really start researching on things that can bind us together as one entity ... It is obvious that the people of southern Nigeria Have a common origin ...I would just like to urge our historians to engage in more research and tell us how weare linked

There was a segment once on NTA about that. There are actually a lot of similarities among the 3 major languages... i'll think of some of them cos this was like 8yrs ago.

The majority of languages spoken in southern Nigeria come from the same ancestral language, which was spoken in the Middle Belt region (probably around the Niger-Benue confluence) between 3,000-6,000 years ago. They're related through grammar, vocabulary, and syntax, so a lot of words for common things are shared, the way that many western European languages share terms through their Latin ancestry.

I guess u are referring to the Nok civilisation ?...which at the time rivaled some of it's contemporaries in Europe ....I have also noticed that it's bot just the language we have in common ...there are also certain religious rites that are performed similarly ...like there are instances where to clense someone of a curse as i was told in some parts of Igboland ,A cock is slaughtered and taken round the persons head trice then then the blood dripping from the neck of the cock is used to touch the person's left big toe ....this follows just about the same pattern recommended in the Ifa Corpus for some sacrifies .

Not directly. The Nok finds are dated after the diverging of southern Nigerian languages. Unfortunately, there's no way to know what type of language the Nok civilization spoke, but linguists use a method called glottochronology to trace language origins and relationships. By compiling and comparing thousands of words/grammar/syntax from neighboring languages, you can build a theory of origin and date how and when they began, grew, and split into their modern forms. Culturally though, Nok art is probably an immediate ancestor to Igala/Ife/Benin/Igbo-Ukwu art styles. Distinctive features like the shape of the eyes, some of the ethnic markings, hairstyles, and the forms of dress of the Nok statues are shared with some or all of the later art styles of central/southern Nigeria. Nok art is also found all the way north into Kaduna and Sokoto areas.

You're right--the language is just an aspect of the general cultural similarities. In religion, for instance, the oldest forms are Earth veneration, which in Igbo is Ale (some dialects Ani), and Ile in Yoruba. Worshipping a personal god that is similar to a soul is also common to Yoruba (ori, the inner head/personal god); Igbo (chi, personal god, possibly related to isi); Edo (ehi, personal god) etc. In these languages, vowels might change (i.e. what might begin with an 'o' in Yoruba would be a 'u' in Igbo or 'e' in Edo), but consonants are much more stable, which is why they all end in 'i'. Unfortunately, I don't know much about languages like Ijaw, which are also from the same group, but with some special features of their own.

Let me know if you're interested and I'll PM you some stuff.
