Default Culture in Focus : Nupe

I must apologize for taking so long to update the NR culture in Focus segment, competing priorities have led to this. However, this week’s culture in Focus is Nupe.

The Nupe are found in the middle belt region of Nigeria, particularly in Niger state. They are pre dominantly agnostic, and Muslim, and most of their present day culture is heavily influenced by Islam.

Ethhologue gives us the following description of their ethnicity.

Population 800,000 (1990). Region Niger State, Mariga, Gbako, Agaie, and Lapai LGAs; Kwara State, Edu LGA; KoGi State, KogiLGA; Federal Capital Territory. Alternate names NUPE, NUFAWA, NUPECI, NUPENCHI, NUPECIDJI, NUPENCIZI Dialects NUPE CENTRAL (NIFE, ANUPE, NUPECIZI, NUPENCIZI, AMPEYI, ANUPECWAYI, ANUPERI, TAPA, TAPPAH, TAKPA), NUPE TAKO (BASSA NGE). Classification Niger-Congo, Atlantic-Congo, Volta-Congo, Benue-Congo, Nupoid, Nupe-Gbagyi, Nupe. Comments Nupe Central has become the literary norm. A regionally important language. Investigation needed: intelligibility with dialects. Trade language. Dictionary. Grammar. Literacy rate in second language: 60%. Fishermen. Muslim, traditional religion, Christian. Bible 1953-1989.

However for those that are interested in a more detailed history of the Nupe people and their origins, the link below ( PDF) will give an apt introduction to the NUPE.

Enjoy the read.

I really like these culture in focus pieces.

So, this might seem silly but how do you pronounce Nupe? Is it Nupe like the fraternity?
