Default My Evidence for Creation Theory

Ok...i was working on writing this during winter break and was almost done when winter classes started....i got delayed for few weeks but decided to finally wrap it up today. I hope to share the info that I have recieved to help further the knowledge of our creator and his creation. So here it goes....this is my evidence for creation theory:

The 7 Day Theory

by Onyiiboy

Genesis, which is the “busiest” book of the Bible is arguably the most important. In this one book, the creation of the universe, the rise and fall of man, a catastrophic flood, the scattering of men across the globe, as well as the beginnings of the tribe of Israel are detailed. Of all of these events, the most controversial would be the creation of the universe. For generations, Christians have confided in the Genesis account of creation of the universe, holding it nearly as fundamental to their faith as the divinity of Christ. Many hold the Creation account to be true…even when it appears to go against science and logic. But does it really go against science? It all depends on how one interprets the scriptures.

The Bible has been interpreted in nearly as many languages as it’s been translated in. In regards to the Genesis account of creation, there are three main ways that it has been interpreted. One interpretation, known as Young Earth Creationism, follows the idea that the Universe was created in 6 days consisting of 24 hours. The other, more popular interpretation, known as Old Earth Creationism, has the Universe being created in 6 ages ranging from 1000 years to billions. The third way of interpreting the Genesis account is to regard it as simply a fairy tale. Each theory has its variants (expanding time theory, replicated earth theory, revelatory day theory, etc.) but primarily can be grouped into those three categories. Of all of these interpretations, which one is the closest to the actual meaning of the Bible?

The key lies in uncovering how long each “day” was. The Hebrew word for day, “yom” is often used like day is used in English; to describe a 24 hour period of time or a undefined length of time (i.e. “Day of the Lord” or “In the old days”). In the Genesis account, “yom” is used in conjunction with the words for morning and evening (“boquer” and “ereb”, respectively). Young Earth Creationists often cite the use of these words to prove that the days in the Genesis account refer only to 24 hour periods of time and not to longer periods of time. However, in the same Bible, there are several cases in which these words are used to describe a period of time much longer than 24 hours:

Psalms 90:5-6
“You have swept them away like a flood, they fall asleep; In the morning they are like grass which sprouts anew. In the morning it flourishes and sprouts anew; toward evening it fades and withers away”

Daniel 8:26
"The vision of the evenings and mornings which has been told is true; But keep the vision secret, For it pertains to many days in the future."

As one can see from these examples, the words morning, evening, and day can be used together to describe long periods of time. However, only by analyzing context clues can one determine if this was indeed the meaning that the author of Genesis was implying. Genesis 2:4 refers to the entire creation event as a day in itself, saying that it occurred “in the day that the Lord God made earth and heaven." Theoretically, even if the events of the other days had been instantaneous, the events of the 6th day could not have been the same, for it described processes that would have taken a lot more than 24 hours. In the 6th day alone, both mammals and mankind were created, the Garden of Eden was planted and matured, the animals were named by Adam, and Eve was created out of his rib as a result of his loneliness. Seeing as how half of these events involved human beings, it’s impossible that they could have taken place in a 24 hour period of time. A final clue that is one that is very much overlooked is the fact the 7th day of creation was never completed, as there was no mention of its “evening” or “morning” as there was in other days. Using all of the aforementioned context clues, one can reach a solid conclusion that the days of creation could not have been 24 hour periods.

Now that one can safely conclude on the definition of the days of Genesis, the logical choice for its interpretation would be Old Earth Creationism. With that being said, is there a reasonable amount of evidence to substantiate that the events of Genesis took place as they were written. If one believes the rest of the scriptures, then one wouldn’t have to look hard to find that evidence, for it would already be there all around us. Psalms 19:1 state that, "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork." In his letter to the Romans, Paul affirms that “For the invisible things of Him [God] since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity” (Romans 1:20). If Old Earth Creationism is true, then the evidence would be backed up by science that would be hard to deny.

So exactly what does the Bible say about the creation of the universe? Genesis 1:1 states that "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." With that one statement, the creation of the entire universe, including the earth, is recounted,. The use of the conjunction “and” shows that the remaining days are not a summary of God’s creation, but a detailing of the evolution of our planet. Now, we shall take a critical look at each “day” and the evidence of its occurrence:

Day 1:

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was [a] formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. (Genesis 1:1-3)

In the first day, the heavens and the earth are shown to have been created by God, with the earth being without form and void. No explanation is giving to how God created the heavens and the earth just that it was done by Him (although several verses later in the Bible speak of him “stretching out the heavens”). However, an explanation is given to how God shaped the earth, which is backed up by science. Scientists believe that the atmosphere of the early earth was formed from H2O gas that was released by millions of meteorites that continually bombarded the surface. The gas that was released combined with multiple gases, including CO2, to form incredibly dense clouds above the earth. The little light would be able to permeate these clouds that there would not be a difference between day and night. Genesis states that God allowed for some of the light to get through these clouds, making day and night as we know it today possible.

Day 2:

6 And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." 7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the expanse "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day. (Genesis 1:6-8)

The early Earth’s atmosphere of thick clouds composed of water vapor, eventually rained out and formed the oceans in the Hadean era. Thus, there was a separation of the water above from the water below, just as Genesis states occurred in the second day.

Day 3:

9 And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day. (Genesis 1: 9-13)

Volcanic activities beneath the earth’s oceans did form today’s land. Scientists believe that this process happened rather quickly, occurring in thousands of years, compared to millions. The formation of land was followed by the introduction of land plants during the Early Silurian period, and a large influx of them during the Devonian one.

Day 4:

14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day. (Genesis 1:14-19)

Day 4 is one that is often very misconstrued. While many interpret it as God creating the great celestial bodies of the universe, that would invalidate Genesis 1:1 which states that God created the heavens and the earth. Furthermore, plants could not have been created before the sun as they require photosynthetic processes for survival. A more logical explanation would be that God fully revealed the stars, sun, and moon on this day, not created them. The use of the phrase “let there be”, is only used three times in the entire creation account, and in two of those three events, the only logical interpretation would be revelation not creation (i.e. God reveling the light on the first and fourth day, not creating it). Perhaps by this time, due to chemical reductions of the atmosphere, the sky finally ended up looking the same as it does presently.

Day 5:

20 And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day. (Genesis 1:20-23)

A good number of events occurred on Day 5. Life in the seas became abundant (Devonian period), but only after plants had released enough oxygen in the air to be dissolved into the sea. The only conflict between scriptures and science occurs as verse 21 states that birds also became numerous during this period despite not really showing up until a couple hundred million years later (the Miocene period) . The only organisms with wings that appear within this time frame are insects so perhaps this could have been a translation error or another misunderstanding of the original texts.

Day 6:
[B]
24 And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:24-27)

Day 6 perfectly describes Cenozoic era, which is the one that we are presently in. During it, mammals and rodents appear first (Tertiary period), followed by Homo sapiens (Quaternary period).

Day 7:

1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested [a] from all his work. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. (Genesis 2:1-3)

On Day 7, the final day of creation, God “rested” and made no more new creations. What’s significant about this day is the fact that it never ended, as there is no mention of “evening” or “morning.” In fact, we are still in the 7th day right now.

In conclusion, Genesis not only doesn’t go against science, but compliments it. The Genesis account of creation coincides with the latest archeological, geological, and other scientific findings and beliefs. The writer of Genesis was not only able to get the processes correct, but most importantly, was able to place them in the correct order. One cannot argue against the teaching of creation in schools, because it is already being taught through geology, astronomy, geography, and all other earth sciences. The heavens and firmament of the earth truly do display God's glory and handiwork.

Default Re: My Irrefutable Evidence for Creation Theory

Hello again, thanks for taking the time out to write a worthy article. Before carrying on, I feel it is necessary I make it clear that I have no problems with anyone's belief in the biblical version of creation. However, what I do have a problem with, is the attempt to present it as scientific, especially with little or no scientific evidence.

The 7 Day Theory

The Bible has been interpreted in nearly as many languages as it’s been translated in. In regards to the Genesis account of creation, there are three main ways that it has been interpreted. One interpretation, known as Young Earth Creationism, follows the idea that the Universe was created in 6 days consisting of 24 hours.

Young Earth Creationism is is more than a belief that the Earth was created in six, twenty four hours, days. Young Earth Creationists (YECs) also believe that the Earth and Universe are 6000-10,000 years old (infact that's where the moniker they bear come from). They also tend to oppose the occurence of evolution, and if they accept evolution, it's usually a macabre form of hyperevolution.

Quote:
The other, more popular interpretation, known as Old Earth Creationism, has the Universe being created in 6 ages ranging from 1000 years to billions. The third way of interpreting the Genesis account is to regard it as simply a fairy tale.
In my opinion, "fairy tale" might be an unfair description of the beliefs of many. What they believe is that the creation account is either mythological, or allegorical.

Quote:
Each theory has its variants (expanding time theory, replicated earth theory, revelatory day theory, etc.) but primarily can be grouped into those three categories. Of all of these interpretations, which one is the closest to the actual meaning of the Bible?

The key lies in uncovering how long each “day” was. The Hebrew word for day, “yom” is often used like day is used in English; to describe a 24 hour period of time or a undefined length of time (i.e. “Day of the Lord” or “In the old days”).

In his letter to the Romans, Paul affirms that “For the invisible things of Him [God] since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity” (Romans 1:20). If Old Earth Creationism is true, then the evidence would be backed up by science that would be hard to deny.
No arguments from me so far. I just wish YECs and their spin-offs would take note of what you've presented so far.

Intriguing and a good explanation of your interpretation. However, it seems your beliefs are more in line with theistic evolution/abiogenesis/big bang, as opposed to creationism.

Also, I have to mention that you haven't presented any scientific evidence for the creation theory. You've merely shown how your interpretation of the Genesis account can be compatible with the currently held scientific theories, which is all well and good, but not what creationists have claimed creationism and/or creation theory is all about.

The mistake that you're making is that there is one singular creation theory...which is false....mine is one of many and i feel that mine is the only one that makes sense

Aye, you are right, it's easy to believe that the majority represents the entire spectrum, I apologise for that. Be that as it may, you still haven't presented any scientific evidence for your creation theory. Surely that would be necessary for your theory to be a valid scientific theory.

I dont' think that the majority feels that the world was created in 7 days

It seems that way to me, the majority of creationists I've run into are the "God created the Earth and Universe within seven days" type.

Here are some polls, which admittedly is based on American beliefs. Perhaps an explanation for why many (including me) believe YECs are the majority when it comes to creationists.

Here are some polls, which admittedly is based on American beliefs. Perhaps an explanation for why many (including me) believe YECs are the majority when it comes to creationists.
In 1999-NOV, Focus on the Family, a Fundamentalist Christian agency, concluded a poll of their web site visitors concerning their beliefs about creation and evolution. Results were:

God created the universe, but I don't know when: 46%

God created the universe thousands of years ago: 43%

God created the universe billions of years ago: 10%

Life came into being and evolved on its own: 1%

I don't have a clue: 0.4% 6

[Author's note: The poll is not particularly well designed; it mixes apples and oranges. The first three options concern when the world came into existence and assumes that God created it. The fourth response concerns evolution of life on earth. A participant in the poll might well believe that God created the world billions of years ago and that life evolved on its own. They would believe in two options, but could mark only one.]
