Default Desktop Publishing Software Recommendations

I need to do some desktop publishing, I need to make my own catalogue and i wonder what's a good software for this. Free software get's priority first, but if there is no good quality software then perhaps I will umm use word?

Don't know much about this but I think Microsoft Publisher suits this purpose better than Microsoft Word. Publisher is lightweight though so you probably have to get something better if you are really into it.

ofcourse chet don come with his Microsoft stuff. Anyway, depending on it's purpose, free might not cut it. Microsoft Publisher is really good(easy to learn), however Adobe Pagemaker is better. Downside to pagemaker(and alot of adobe products) is it is pretty pricey. How's $500, though I wouldn't say it is overpriced because it does ALOT of cool stuff, but at the same time you probably won't be using it that much, unless you are opening up a printing press or something? Another downside to pagemaker is that because of the gazillion things it can do, it is not the easiest thing to figure out.

If you are not doing hard core publishing, then I say go with Publisher. I assume you use MS Office so it won't be too hard for you to figure out what you wanna do.

However if you will be doing some serious stuff, then Pagemaker is the way to go.

Don't know of any other software apps that will allow you create high quality pubs nearly as well as the two I have mentioned.

What did you expect me to do? Come up with an open-source solution?
